Why Is it Important to Eat Healthy While Pregnant?

0

When expecting, it’s important to give your baby the healthiest start possible. Abstaining from tobacco, alcohol and high levels of caffeine are important cornerstones to prenatal health.

However, eating a healthy diet rich with vitamins and protein is vital to the proper development of your baby.

Eat Healthy While Pregnant

Protein

Eating lean meats, poultry, beans and eggs will provide you and your baby with protein, which is essential for the development of a fetus. Protein, such as chicken and fresh eggs, will provide you with energy and your baby with nourishment.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables will nourish you with vitamins C and E, which will reduce the risk of eclampsia, a severe condition that if left untreated can harm you and your baby.

Eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables, like spinach, broccoli or apples, will help your child to get off to a good start.

Folic Acid

One of the key components of prenatal vitamins is folic acid, which helps reduce the risk of miscarriage and birth defects. Doctors recommend pregnant women get 400 mcg of folic acid per day.

While a prenatal vitamin will likely be necessary to reach that goal, you can get this important dietary element through foods like whole-wheat bread, orange juice and spinach.

Calcium

Calcium enables your child to create solid bones and teeth. Ensure you’re getting enough calcium through nourishments, for example, squeezed orange or low-fat dairy items, similar to yogurt or skim milk

Iron

When pregnant, you’ll have to take in an elevated amount of iron. Iron is found in meats, beans, potatoes and numerous different nourishments.

It helps reduce the risk of anemia and aids in the production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout your blood cells.

Unsaturated Fats

Unsaturated fats, found in beans, nuts and oily fish like salmon, are also important for your growing baby. Unsaturated fats help your baby’s brain and eyes develop.
