Travel Insurance for Medical Problems

0

Travel insurance is available for a variety of medical problems you could encounter overseas. Whether you are planning a one-week or 10-month trip abroad, you can find travel insurance that will cover some of your costs should you need medical care.

Some types of coverage include medical emergency evacuation and hazardous sports coverage. You may also be able to include other types of travel coverage with your medical insurance on the same plan.

Purpose

Medical travel insurance is necessary since most United States health insurance plans do not cover costs out of the country. However, some may offer partial coverage. If you are injured or become ill overseas, you may be expected to pay for treatment before receiving it.

Medical travel insurance can help you recover some of the costs you incur. It can also help you pay for transportation under medical supervision back to the United States if required.

Package

General travel insurance that includes other items such as lost or stolen baggage and trip cancellation coverage also provides some emergency medical coverage. These plans typically offer medical emergency evacuation and care.

Medically supervised travel has high costs, and many insurance providers provide up to $1 million in medical evacuation costs. This may be a good option if you are planning one trip or a number of trips in a given year.

Major Medical

If you plan to be out of the country for six months or more, a major medical plan may be a good idea. It gives comprehensive medical protection. Some things it covers include emergency treatment and wellness care, in addition to prescription drug coverage if you want it.

These plans have in- and out-of-network providers, co-payments and deductibles just like U.S.-based health insurance. They also include medical evacuation and accidental death coverage. These types of plans are not available online, and you must apply for them.

Single and Multi-Trip

Single trip medical insurance lets you decide on the amount of medical coverage you want. Multi-trip plans are like single-trip plans, but you can opt for a year’s worth of coverage for more than one trip, which can save you money if you travel often.

Maximum trip lengths are 15, 30 or 70 days. Both single- and multi-trip plans may include coverage for other trip situations like accidental death, baggage loss and trip interruption.
