A food journal allows you to review what you have eaten to figure out if your diet is suitable for your lifestyle. Creating a food journal is one way to begin a nutrition or weight loss goal.

It is also something serious athletes keep as part of their training regiment. Understanding the proper ways to write and review your food journal will allow you to track your goals.

1. Create three columns on a piece of paper in your journal.

Label each column with the words, “food,” “amount” and “time of day.” Use a different journal page each day.

 

2. Write down everything you eat including drinks and snacks.

 

3. Write down the amount of each food, no matter how small.

If you are unsure about the amount, estimate.

 

4. Write down the time of day you eat the foods.

Be specific by giving a numerical time. If you are unsure when you ate, estimate. This will be beneficial for understanding your metabolism as it may vary at different times of the day.

 

5. Review your article at the end of each day.

Makes notes in areas for improvement and praise yourself for good choices. Reflect on how you feel when you meet your goals, and write your feelings in your journal.

If you have have met your goals at the end of the week, reward yourself with a movie or activity you enjoy.

 

Tips & Warnings

  • Write down the foods and drinks when you eat them. Do not wait until the end of the day as you may forget items.
  • If you have a specific diet you would like to follow, include in your journal a menu for each meal and then follow it as closely as possible. Record what you eat and check that it matches the menu.
