You may not have the ability to control your boss‘s mood or some of your co-worker’s irritating habits, but happiness or unhappiness at work is often a matter of choice.

Making some minor changes in your routine and adjusting your mindset is often all it takes to have a more positive work experience and be happy at work.

Quiet Time

You may often feel that you have so much to do that you need to rush to get the day started, but taking some quiet time each morning not only can boost your happiness, but it can also help give you the energy that you need to make it through the rest of the day.

Nataly Kogan, the co-founder and CEO of Happier, a digital wellness company, states in a Time article that how you feel in the morning affects how the rest of the day goes. She suggests making a point to do something each morning, such as taking a moment to savor a cup of coffee, to help start the day on a positive note.

As you progress through the day, continue to take small breaks to give yourself a little breathing space before moving from one task to the next.

 

Gotta Love It

It’s easy to get irritated when the boss or a co-worker does something that bothers you. Taking a step back and acknowledging that sometimes people have some really unusual habits can help you better understand their actions.

As an example, realizing that the co-worker who likes to ask annoying questions is actually needy instead of intentionally trying to irritate you, can help make the situation more amusing than bothersome.

 

The Bigger Picture

Finding meaning in what you are doing is often a big contributing factor to being happy at work. Look at your accomplishments throughout the day to help you know that you are making progress in your career and are moving forward.

Give yourself a pat on the back as you finish each project and celebrate when you learn something new. These accomplishments, no matter how small, can help you keep your eye on the bigger picture, especially on days when you would otherwise feel overwhelmed.

 

Reflections on the Day

As you head for home, your mind may want to dwell on everything that went wrong during the day. Taking a moment instead to reflect on everything that went right and what you’re grateful for can help you stay positive and more optimistic overall. Inc. suggests getting out a journal, tablet or smartphone and writing down at least one positive memory from the day.

They state that this gives you something to look at in the future that will remind you of the reasons you have worked so hard.
