How Does Spinach Increase Strength?
Spinach is a leafy green vegetable that has long been believed to increase strength. The poster boy for the supposedly amazing powers of spinach, of course, is Popeye.
With his bulging biceps, Popeye guzzled spinach and took on the world. Fact has been mixed with a fair share of fiction when it comes to spinach.
In the late 19th century, a doctor placed a decimal point in the wrong position when writing down the iron content in spinach. The error led to a belief that spinach is 10 times as iron-rich as it actually is.
This mistake was corrected in 1937, long after the myth of spinach had become popularized. This does not mean, though, that spinach does not help muscle growth and increase strength.
Spinach contains iron and magnesium. Both of these minerals are necessary for healthy muscle growth. Spinach also contains other health-promoting vitamins and minerals.
Popeye aside, researchers in Australia determined that spinach is not easily absorbed into the body. Therefore, the type of iron (non-blood) in spinach may not be so beneficial to muscle expansion.
Although spinach may not be the sole food for budding Mr. Universes, the leafy green vegetable has many health benefits, including muscle development.
Iron carries oxygen to muscles, where it is stored. Spinach also promotes a healthy heart, helps minimize brain damage in stroke patients and prevents anemia.
